At the nonprofit Center for an Ecology-Based Economy (CEBE) in the Appalachian foothills of western Maine, stories of weather extremes and the economic pain of recovery serve as real-life prompts to work with communities on climate resilience and green-energy approaches.

Tourism and vacation homes are economic pillars for many western Maine small towns, but climate change and development threaten the safety and stability of the region for both residents and tourists alike.

The CEBE has found that the most effective model for convincing climate skeptics is rooted in work close to home, and in the face of federal funding cuts, local initiatives and regional coordination are pivotal...CEBE lost $80,000 of federal funds this year because of clawbacks by the Trump administration. Private donors have partially filled the gap.
