Fleming County Schools in rural Kentucky has saved hundreds of thousands of dollars by switching to electric school buses, thanks to federal funding from the EPA's Clean School Bus Program. The savings have been so significant that the district has been able to increase teacher pay.
The electric buses are not only quieter and cleaner but also cost much less to maintain and operate compared to their old diesel buses. This transition has been a game-changer for the district, allowing more funds to be directed towards education.
Beyond the maintenance costs, the district was spending thousands of dollars on diesel fuel, at a rate of approximately $0.60 per mile. Now, with their new electric school buses, they pay just $0.12 per mile for energy, an 80% per mile cost savings.
