In April 2021, Ultium Cells announced plans for a second facility in Spring Hill, Tennessee, and progress is well under way, next door to where General Motors will build the all-electric Cadillac LYRIQ. The state-of-the-art Spring Hill plant will use the most advanced and efficient battery cell manufacturing processes. The facility is scheduled to begin production in January 2024 and by the completion of the launch will employ 1,700 people in new high-tech jobs. The plant will be extremely flexible and able to adapt to ongoing advances in technology and materials.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Stuart McWhorter today announced Ultium Cells LLC, a joint venture of LG Energy Solution and General Motors, will expand its Spring Hill, Tennessee, battery cell manufacturing operations. Ultium Cells will increase battery cell production by more than 40 percent, from 35 gigawatt-hours to 50 GWh. The Tennessee facility will supply battery cells to General Motors’ Spring Hill assembly plant for production of the Cadillac LYRIQ, the first electric vehicle produced at the plant, and other GM Ultium Platform-based electric vehicles. Production at the 2.8-million-square-foot facility will begin in late 2023. The project represents a $275 million investment by Ultium Cells, which is in addition to the $2.3 billion investment announced in April 2021, and is expected to create 400 additional jobs. Once the facility is fully operational, Ultium Cells is expected to employ a workforce of 1,700 in Maury County.

Ultium Cells LLC, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution, will upgrade its manufacturing plant in Tennessee to produce lower-cost lithium iron phosphate – or LFP – battery cells, the company announced Monday. Conversion of battery cell lines at Spring Hill will begin later this year, with commercial production expected by late 2027, Ultium said.
