Cuyahoga County Partnership Secured a $129M EPA Grant to Install Solar on Landfills and Brownfields

Thanks to the EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant, a Cuyahoga County (Ohio)-led partnership received $129 million which will allow them to: 1) develop 63 megawatts of solar energy across several sites, 2) eliminate 1 million metric tons of carbon emissions over 25 years, and 3) create 60-70 full-time jobs & another 130 construction jobs.

USW 689 Secures Nearly $2M for Appalachian Clean Energy Training Center at Former Portsmouth Plant Site

USW 689 will receive nearly $2 million for "The Appalachian Clean Energy Industrial Assessment Center Project," which will create a training center at the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant site in Pike County, OH. This site is transitioning into a clean energy and manufacturing hub.

Appalachian Voices secured $900,000 in federal funds to build climate change resilience through projects focusing on sustainable development & resilience hubs. Funding comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act via the EPA's Environmental Collaborative Problem Solving (EJCPS) and DOE's Buildings UP Competition (https://appvoices.org/2023/10/12/buildings-upgrade-prize/).

Oak Run Solar Project

The Oak Run project is Ohio's largest solar project and the nation's largest agrivoltaic project ever. The project boasts 800 MW of solar panels alongside 300 MW of energy storage capacity. Spanning 6000 acres in Madison County, this $1 billion project will harness solar energy and feature battery arrays for consistent power supply. This project will generate thousands of labor union jobs, with more than 60 long-term positions focused on operations and maintenance.

Coal-Producing West Virginia is Converting an Entire School System to Solar Power

Coal-producing West Virginia is converting an entire school system to solar power built by union labor workers. Thanks to the IRA, this will be the biggest-ever single demonstration of sun-powered renewable electricity in Appalachian public schools. The agreement is between Wayne County Schools and West Virginian solar installer and developer Solar Holler.
